Husn-i Jahan Khanum (Valiyah)

d. 1861 or 1862

Husn-i Jahan Khanum was the daughter of Fatimah Khanum (Sunbul Baji) and Fath ʻAli Shah Qajar. At the insistence of Aman Allah, the governor of Kurdistan, she married his son, Khusraw Khan in 1821 or 1822. They had three daughters and three sons, named as Khanum Khanumha, ʻAdilah Sultan, Aghah Khanum, Riza Quli Khan, Ghulam Shah Khan, and Ahmad Khan. After Khusraw Khan's death, Husn-i Jahan Khanum asked Fath ʻAli Shah to grant her eldest son, Riza Quli Khan, the government of Kurdistan. Her request was accepted, but because Riza Quli Khan was underaged, Husn-i Jahan Khanum and her overseer, Mirza Faraj, ruled over Kurdistan for ten years, for which became known as Valiyah. She died in 1861 or 1862.

Four years after their marriage, Khusraw Khan married his cousin, Mah Sharaf Khanum (Masturah Kurdistani). Khusraw Khan died of plague in 1834 (or 1835). After Khusraw Khan's death, Masturah left Iran for the Ottoman Empire and stayed there until her death. However, Husn-i Jahan Khanum remained in Kurdistan and asked Fath ʻAli Shah to grant her eldest son, Riza Quli Khan, the government of Kurdistan. Her request was accepted, but because Riza Quli Khan was underaged, Husn-i Jahan Khanum and her overseer, Mirza Faraj, ruled over Kurdistan for ten years, for which she became known as Valiyah. When Ardishir Mirza (son of ʻAbbas Mirza Qajar), the ruler of Garrus, led military forces to Kurdistan in order to conquer it, Valiyah, in full Islamic garb, led her army to defend the territory. Nevertheless, Ardishir Mirza, who saw defeat from the army led by Husn-i Jahan Khanum humiliating, sought another way and asked for Khanum Khanumha's (Valiyah Khanum's daughter) hand. Husn-i Jahan Khanum accepted this offer. Valiyah was a prominant poet in Qajar era and wrote a collection of 600-700 poems. Also, a book called "Basat-i Nishat" has been ascribed to her. She died in 1861 or 1862. Close
