Women's Worlds in Qajar Iran

Letter

Letter

The writer [probably female] sends greetings on behalf of Aqa Sayyid Ibrahim; mentions Aqa Isma‘il Aqa’s stomach pain and planning to call for a doctor; claims that the female servants have become unruly, want husbands, and, in the abscence of the addressee, wear their chador and leave the house; notes that they could have married them off to the male servants, had they not been dismissed; reports that they have sent Ahmad, who has grown up, to live outside the house, but he has now befriended Kulsum, and, according to a rumor, is planing to rent a house and take Kulsum with him; because of this, the writer complains that after all they have done for the servants, they want husbands and wives and that if they kick Ahmad out, Kulsum may follow him; and adds that in a place were Raziyah can leave and be married to [illegible], female servants becoming unruly is inevitable.
