Women's Worlds in Qajar Iran

Letter, 1914

Letter, 1914

The writer [probably female] has received the addressee’s letter of 22 of Ramazan; sends greetings on behalf of Hajiyah Khanum; she will send sour pomegranate and pomegranate paste that the addressee had asked for; talks about how Aqa Kuchak had wanted to let go of the male servants upon Aqa’s order, but that the servants responded by saying that they do not want a stipend and are not leaving unless Aqa personally asks them; she sends greetings on behalf of Khanumjan [her mother] and mentions how Khanumjan is wistful about the past and regrets that with the servants gone, they have to wear a chador and go shopping at the bazaar themselves; they propose that they keep some servants to serve during the day and go to their own homes at night. She asks for a quick response, although she is certain that Aqa Kuchak will ask him not to respond. She mentions that she had put her letter in Aqa Isma‘il’s envelope by mistake and had only realized that after a few days. She talks about receiving the clothing the addressee had sent; sends her greetings to Aqa Muhammad Taqi; mentions that Nur al-Hajiyah sends her greetings and says that she will wear her tirmah outfit when she sees Aqa; expresses her displeasure with the way that the German silverware was divided because she only received two trays from a set of ten and will give those back to the addressee; makes an ironic remark about Muhammad Taqi, who is apparently waiting for the dry weather to go to the bazaar to buy them a souvenir, saying that she will make it up to him by getting a wife for him when she visits them.
