Petition to Nuzhat al-Dawlah

Petition to Nuzhat al-Dawlah

The peasants of the village of Turkaman write to Nuzhat al-Dawlah regarding compliance with her order for their cooperation in helping the poor. They state that everyone has been involved except Musa Kalantar, Karbalayi Khalil, and Hamd Allah Kadkhuda [the village chief], who have enticed the steward, Mashhadi Muhammad Aqa, to send a faulty report to Nuzhat al-Dawlah. They explain that the purpose of their gathering has merely been to follow her orders to help the poor. They also mention that no one has received anything from Nuzhat al-Dawlah’s nine thousand and five hundred-tuman donation, and that Karbalayi Asad Allah has only distributed fifty mans of wheat and, while some grain has been distributed by Arfa‘ al-Mulk’s agent, many people are nevertheless in need of food and assistance. Moreover, due to poverty, the peasants cannot afford to contribute cows and seed in the spring season. They plead to Nuzhat al-Dawlah to consider their pleas.
