Shah Jahan Baygum

Shah Jahan Baygum, daughter of Sikandar Baygum and Jahangir Muhammad Khan, was born on July 29, 1838 in Islamnagar near the city of Bhopal. She was the Baygum of Bhopal for two periods. In 1855, Shah Jahan Baygum married Baqi Muhammad Khan as his third wife. Her daughter from this marriage was Kay Khusraw Jahan. Baqi Muhammad Khan died in 1867. Four years later, Shah Jahan married Navab Sadiq Hasan Khan. Shah Jahan Baygum died on June 16, 1901 in Bhopal.

Shah Jahan wrote several books in Urdu. She initiated the construction of one of the largest mosques in India, the Taj al-Masajid, although it remained incomplete. She also built the Taj Mahal palace at Bhopal. Shah Jahan Baygum contributed generously towards the founding of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh. She also subsidized the cost of a railway to be constructed between Hushang Abad and Bhopal. Close
