My Dear Mrs Platt,

It is certain you will be glad to hear Mrs Caldwell & her three children with her brother Mr DeLambert are in a few days to leave here for America. it will of course be quite a long time before they reach there for they expect to do some sightseeing in India.

Mrs Caldwell will take in her trunk one of the nicest Persian flags made in the school under our beloved Miss Kappes’ direction. I wanted [page 2, right side of image 54] to send it via the Persian Legation in Wash. D.C. but Mrs C. told me she had tried there & things were lost. I am sure you will like it. The silk was made in this country (Yezd) but originally white & dyed here by a Belgian who teaches the chemistry & making of dyes to some of the Persians, but because it was done last year the dye is not good & will not stand water, they cannot import the necessary chemicals for fixing dyes, not since this great war time began. The [page 3, left side of image 54] drawing of the Lion & the Sun were from a flag of the P.O. & Miss K. transferred, cut & planned it all.

I thought at first I could not possibly live without my dear Miss Kappes, my attitude to her was maternal. I watched over her as if she were my own child, it was my way of helping the school & the mystery of how she contracted malignant typhus can never be explained. The distance from the school made it necessary for her to ride in the street cars which are very dirty primitive affairs but we never go in the enclosed department & we had not heard of a case of typhus fever in the [page 4, left side of image 53] city. Since then there have been many cases. both Dr Moody & I thought we might take it. I was with her & over her, & never thought I might take it myself so never used any protection from the first hour she was ill until we took her to her beautiful resting place.

Our home was so peaceful & lovely. I am keeping everything just as we enjoyed it together & my plan is to relieve the one who takes the place of our beloved Lillian & do everything possible for her comfort, at present, a young Swedish woman is with me who shares the household expenses & she is very nice, & I [page 5, image 55] can never live alone.

Mrs Haney sends us the reports of the Teaching Committee[.] Dr. Moody & I enjoy them more than any one can imagine.

I would wonder if you have ever heard of Mrs Wilbur Welch in Los Angeles – it would pay you to look her up. She is a Smith College girl, only daughter of Dr Edmund Carleton of N.Y. City, I was present at her birth & delivered her three times. I have recently heard her husband had died, if you can hunt her up, mention my name, I have not heard [page 6, image 56] from her directly but a letter from New York says she is still in Los Angeles. You would be delighted to know her.

I have much to do & am sure you have & so much love to Mrs Bedee when you write her & a whole lot for yourself.
