My Dear Mrs Platt; –

Perhaps I am not the first one to tell you of the heartbreaking news that was telegraphed to Mr Wilhelm Dec. 1st. just one week ago, our dear angel Miss Kappes ascended to the Supreme Concourse just one week ago & if you can get the letters both Dr Moody & I have written her family you can get all the details.

Many times during the last weeks we have tried to get an opportunity to [page 2, right side of image 50] write you for there are important things we want to tell you.

First of all we were greatly rejoiced at the news of your acct. for the school in the Bank, & to tell you that with the help of your money a fixed deposit drawing interest has been put in the Bank here to amt. of three hundred tomans & Dr Moody proposes that the memorial to Mr Harmen be firmly fixed as a fund for building, & when enough money has been raised & a suitable place bought for the girls or built it be called [page 3, left side of image 50] The Lillian Kappes School. We do not think this place left can ever be filled. Dr Moody & I are to do all in our power to help keep up the school which has reached such a high stage of perfection & since we know the plans of Miss Kappes so well we shall [“lose” crossed out] not neglect a single effort to do as we think she would.

I must tell you that the last bit of sewing she did outside of great necessities was to make a lovely blue sewing bag out of fine figured cambrie, containing a case for scissors, thimble, etc, & in the dainty little [page 4, left side of image 49] thimble case she put in the pretty blue celluloid thimble you sent. inside the thimble she tucked a dainty little note telling where the thimble came from & the whole thing was sent to Haifa to The Greatest Holy Leaf.

A Persian who has been sent from the Goot. as Consul General to Damascus took it.

During the illness of our dear Lillian Dr Moody & I took entire personal care of her & after her spirit had gone into the Presence of Baha Ullah we did every thing for her & because [page 5, right side of image 52] I would like you to send this letter to dear Mrs Bedee I tell you we put on her the dainty lovely garments that Abdul Baha sent her given him by Mrs von Lilienthal while she & Mrs Bedee were in Paris.

It is very easy for some to say she is better off, but I am almost inconsolable. She was like my child & I simply lived for her. we were perfectly happy together & I loved [page 6, right side of image 51] her thoroughly & sincerely. Our home was sweet & peaceful when we were permitted to be by ourselves & I cannot imagine how I can go on from day to day without her.

At present no one has been put in her place in the school, her devoted assistant Safeyeh Khanum cannot work alone & it seems to me impossible that the school entirely in the hands of the Persians can do well. of course the Bahais will continue to send their little girls but even the fanatical Mohammedans [page 7, left side of image 52] were most enthusiastic in praise of her & of the improvement of the conduct of their little girls in their homes.

I am wondering what Manutcher will say when he hears this. he was my interpreter when I first came here & lived with us for five years.

He can tell you a great deal about us & I heard he was to be in California for the winter.

If you see him tell him all I have written you & give him my love.

Our dear Lillian had so [page 8, left side of image 51] many friends in American I dare not think of the sadness this news will give.

The Caldwells will probably go back to America next Autumn & I hope you will see them.
